COVID19 – Corona Virus

As I’m sure you’re already very well aware, Corona Virus outbreaks are on the rise.  In fact, the CDC is predicting a global pandemic.   What can you do, how can you be safe, what can be done to make your facilities, workspaces, classrooms, and even your homes safer?

What is COVID19 or Corona Virus?

What steps can be taken to safeguard yourself against Corona Virus?

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.

• Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
• Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

• Wash hands often
• Clean and disinfect all surfaces you are to come in contact with
• Avoid those that you know are sick with fever, cough, sneezing, etc.. If you must come in contact with them, wear a mask.
• Cover coughs and sneezes
• If you feel ill, stay home.

Here is the latest release from the Seminole County Office of Emergency Management:

Seminole County Office of Emergency Management, Florida Department of Health in Seminole County and partners have been closely monitoring COVID-19 (Coronavirus) for several months and have taken protective measures including: specialized training for employees, procurement of personal protective equipment for first responders, implementation of emergency response plans, and provision of community workshops to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

To date, Seminole County Office of Emergency Management has:

1. Developed an Incident Action Plan that will be implemented at the first confirmed case;
2. Hosted a roundtable with governmental leaders, hospital and medical administrators, immunologists, and allied agencies to strengthen communication and coordination;
3. Scheduled a tabletop exercise for all County, municipal and government agency leaders to take place on March 18, with discussions on continuity of government services if an outbreak occurs and 25% or more of employees are sick or caring for a sick person. This is in addition to Seminole County’s annual pandemic exercise to prepare staff and partners on necessary and appropriate actions;
4. Held regular conference calls with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Florida Department of Health.  An Incident Management Team has been established in Tallahassee and the Emergency Operations Center has been activated at the Atlanta CDC Headquarters; and
5. Is hosting community outreach activities including community workshops, online Q&A sessions, social media posts, and media interviews.

Practicing personal health and hygiene actions are key in preventing the spread of respiratory viruses. Seminole County Emergency Management recommends following the Center for Disease Control guidelines:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then discard the tissue.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you are sick, stay home and practice “social distancing.”
